Most players that compete in SSBM or SSBB tournaments can be seen wiping their analog sticks with their shirt between matches. I assume this is to reduce the amount of grease/sweat on the controllers, preventing slipping. I was wondering if there's a more efficient/reliable method of keeping the analog stick clean during matches or play-sessions. Are third-party controller modifications allowed? For example, would I be able to use a controller that uses a more adhesive analog stick (say, if I swapped a PS2 controller's analog stick top rubber with the GCN controllers?) |

I think if you can get one to fit then you should be able to add a different rubber onto the stick.

Many people I know have put random stuff around the grips. I've got painter's tape wrapeed around duct-tape wrapped around the grips. I've got really long and thin fingers. The tape gives me better grip. Some people put rubber bands around the grips. I know a friend who likes to submerge his hands in ice-cold water to prevent slipping. I honestly believe it's mostly a mental thing. Any routine you've got can easily put you in the right frame of mind. Some TOs allow modifications but require the controllers to be inspected before use. |

For a while I swapped my analog stick and c-stick with the Classic Controller sticks. It's kind of weird at first because the sticks are higher up and the c-stick is smaller than the Classic Controller's stick, but I find the Wii control sticks have much better grip than the gamecube controller.

I keep finding myself holding onto the control stick with my thumb and pointer finger if it slips. Honestly it feels more natural but I know someone is going to say it's more strenuous or tiring or less efficient to hold it like that. My friend tends to put his good controller in his cold basement whenever he know we are doing a smashfest later. We laugh at him for it but I see where he is coming from. xD |

I just replaced my GCN analog stick with a Wii nunchuck's, and the difference is night and day. It's amazing! The ports are compatible as well, which made the switch painless. |

Lol. I don't know of any other playerbase with a more ghetto way of customization.

That's not overly ghetto though, people have been doing stuff like that with pizza boxes, shoe boxes, and all that stuff because it's cheap and it gives you a way to easily get inside your stick to switch/fix your buttons and whatnot. Buying the real stick cases is a lot of money. |

@B.W. would it be legal to play with a G.C controller with different sticks? I currently have a G.C controller with two analog sticks.

Yes, it's completely legal to do that.

Yeah, most T.O.'s are fine with controller modding. The only thing I've ever seen a T.O ban was a controller with turbo buttons. My current controller uses the Wii Nunchuk's Analog Stick and has the springs from the L and R shoulder buttons removed. Feels a lot more comfortable for me to the point where I can't play on a normal GC controller. |

In P:M I don't think people care so much about the springs L and R buttons removed. In Melee, I know a lot of people were against it and it was banned a lot of the time, though I forget the reason for it. Unless that ended up changing somewhere along the line. |

The logic was that it made light presses easier.
