How to Train Your Fox

It's still a little too early to say for Project M, I think (especially considering we don't have a full roster yet), but by Melee standards, Fox is one of, if not the most, technical character in the game.

I don't plan on maining Fox, but I find there's some recognition to be gained in having a technically sound Fox, and I do like playing him quite a bit because of that technical aspect.

As such, I think it would behoove both veteran and up-and-coming Fox players alike to generate a thread which compiles a little toolbox of Fox information, such as...

• An index of Fox's moveset (damage, hitstun, combo-ability, etc)
Of course, it's useful to have this type of information.

• Written and video compilations of Fox's advanced techniques
This is a biggie. I feel we could fit all of Fox's relevant techniques into one video, including a "table of contents" in the description listing times (as links) at which certain techniques are explored for ease of access. This should, of course, also include proper recovery technique.

• Fox's stage scenarios and strategies
Listing the available stages and Fox's ability to perform on them, as well as particular strategies to keep Fox alive longer. How does Fox perform on platforms? Are there certain stages in which Fox can edgeguard particularly well?

• Written and video tutorials on exercises to build muscle memory
This is a big one I feel never gets enough attention. Yes, it's best to practice with other people, but not everyone has that luxury often. As such, I think it would be a good idea to generate videos involving exercises to help build a budding Fox-player's muscle memory- not limited to advanced techniques like Waveshining, mind you, but also in navigating complicated stages, or stages with platforms.

• Matchup scenarios (including %-specific combos and kill combos)
This one's pretty basic, really- just a little index on how Fox matches up against each character, specific combos or techniques that wreck, etc. How does THIS guy, beat all the other guys?

• Exceptional gameplay videos
Again, preferably with time-links to highlight particular moments of exceptional technique when using Fox. This can help give, again, veteran and budding Fox players alike, a new perspective. Not everyone plays the same character completely alike, so having a large collection of videos can help to diversify a player's skill.

... And more, of course! Really, this is something which could help any and all characters in Project M, but being that Fox is typically considered the most technical character by Melee standards, I feel that he should receive a little extra attention in the "guide" area!

Thoughts, anyone? I realize this is probably something that shouldn't have to be said, but I believe that bringing it up can help us get the ball rolling a little faster. Smile

This won't likely pick up any time soon. For the time being, the smash boards Melee Fox threads are the best place to read up on Fox.

I think right now isn't the best time for it. But when it does happen, I think it should be for every character and not just fox.

I am a melee fox main however lately i have strayed from using fox in Project M due to the 1 frame movement delay issue and other such things like up-throw > up-air not being identical and minor things like character model pushback and doraki jumps. as of now P:M fox feels different enough from himself in melee that i would rather mess around with wolf as far as tech skill and not have it affect my melee gameplay. a lot of fox is muscle memory and to some extent situational, but the same can be said for most characters given different match ups. So for most fox players it'll just take powering through the drudgery of repetitive waveshining etc. make sure you can Perfect Wavedash as it gives you the extra length necessary to connect with the available follow-ups mainly Upsmash. i have a waveshine follow up thread most people apparently overlook but its there if people want to go into training mode and prove my findings right/wrong.

sorry i can't be of much more help. but regardless for fox to keep moving forward in this environment it will take more fox players talking, and doing some sexy stuff in tournaments, on these boards or melee fox's smashboards. which as The Devicer has stated is pretty much the database on fox technicalities in melee and for the most part applies, just be aware that not every little thing will work in Project M...

^^^ The above post is correct. Anything staple in Melee that you use in Project M with Fox becomes nothing, but a bad habit. Ex. Upthrow to Upair. It's like when you have a slightly heavy or sorta light character (Ike) you expect the Upair to connect and it doesn't; characters that should have a hard time against Fox doesn't because of lack of stuff that should work not working and options being taken away. Waveshine upsmash not connecting and causing you to get punished. I also think until things like Momentum stacking, 1 frame delay and SCD codes are fixed(gimping Fox second jump or jumps in general) It would be good to just play Fox an entirely new way, which is Camp and Bair for daayyssss.

I actually like Fox alot in this version not that I'm that amazing with him. Though the Fox player Catnip from the TAG tourney did pretty good i thought.

Well I never played Melee and I find Fox to be a blast. I agree that If you've got muscle memory and still intend to play Melee regularly, stick to Fox in Melee and drop him in P:M. Still, the furry is insanely fun.

Tripwire,

C@nip did do well. And fox in this version is as close as they've gotten to melee fox (compared to prior pm versions/ mods such as brawl+ etc), however a lot of melee fox mains aren't going to want to put the effort into him as he is now because he is deemed "not close enough" to melee fox. Catnip has probably placed the highest of any pm fox in tournament, however it does not change the fact that there are still differences between pm fox and melee fox. on top of that he had a unique play style. he used a lot more fair, and blaster than the average fox, as well as a lack of shine-> upsmash, in the set it was only used once against zelda and only when zelda was up against a wall. Although ike is the perfect weight for it even with the 1 frame movement lag in pm. also a lot of upthrow -> upairs were whiffed against zelda but happened to land it "once" against ike later in the set. also although catnip used jab a lot in combination with aerials and shine for shield pressure he did not use it to set up n upsmash for a kill at the workable percents.

the key point i am making is that so much of what is/should be a regular part of fox's arsenal in melee does not carry to pm. yet i applaud catnip for his well adapted use of pm fox. Lasers should become much more regular as well as aerials, more so then before, especially since shield pressure is brawl styled right now. newcomer fox mains in pm should follow a similar play style with heavy lasering and baiting and punishing. melee fox mains may choose to stay away because there is a disconnect between these two foxes. i am interested to see how catnip will deal with other match ups in the future though.
