Booting Project M:

Since the PMBR does not support piracy, we have found a way to let Wii users play their game without modding their Wii. Project M uses a Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s stage builder file to allow the mod to boot directly from an SD card of size 2GB or smaller without anything needing to be installed on the Wii.

The mod will be inactive as long as the user does not access the stage builder and its effect is temporary. In other words, the mod does not corrupt your Brawl data and if you want to play Brawl, you just need to remove your SD card that contains the Project M files. The entire process leaves absolutely no trace, is 100% brick-safe and is completely reversible. The most you could ever experience is a freeze if the game files are not in the proper directories.

Of course, installing Project M correctly should not cause freeze issues. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to install Project M. Follow these steps, and you should be set:

Materials needed:
• A 2GB or less non-SDHC SD card.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl came out before the Wii has been
updated to accept SD cards over 2GB. The game
itself is incapable of detecting anything that goes beyond that.
Your SD card must have this shape:

• A working NTSC-U (North American) copy of Super Smash Bros.
Brawl.
• A working NTSC-U (North American) Nintendo Wii.

1. Delete any custom Brawl stage files on your Wii and SD Card! Reformating it is even easier (FAT32).
2. Make sure that you are not receiving stages from Nintendo via Wi-Fi connection. Deactivate this feature from Brawl if you do. You can forcefully delete any remaining ones by changing the time of your Wii, loading brawl once, and then setting it back to normal.
3. a) Run the installer or download the Zip (The installer is best for those with no modding experience but Mac users must use the Zip). If your Wii was not hacked, make sure that you select the “hackles method” like so:

Then, make sure you direct your download to the root of your SD card like so:

3 b) If you downloaded the zip file, unzip the file and open the folder that comes out. Install the files to the root of your SD Card with the installer. There is no need to change the order.

4. Move the contents of that folder to your SD Card. It should look like this:

Note: There is a "Full" and a "Wi-Fi" version of each method. The full build has the most up-to-date mechanics and provides optimal experience. It is also the tournament-legal build. The Wi-Fi-version sacrifices some mechanics features to enable Wi-fi play with other Project M owners.

5. Boot up Brawl and go to the Stage Builder and make sure that the SD card is selected.
6. Gecko OS will launch; select Launch Game. There is no need to play with any of the options.
7. You will see a straploader saying PROJECT M Demo v2.0. Additionally, if your menu image looks like the image below, then you may go ahead and play and enjoy Project M!

Troubleshooting:
-- Please check every of these before asking for help --

1. The installer is programmed to put everything in the right folders. If it asks to merge folders, accept.

2. Make sure your SD card is not locked. This will prevent reading the files. The switch is on the side.

3. Make sure that the metalic portion of your SD card is clean and unobstructed.

4. Make sure that Gameconfig.txt is on the root of your SD card.

5. Do not attempt to reorganize the files. The directories are important.

6. Any attempt to play Project M online without the appropriate codeset of users who do not have Project will desynchronize the game.

7. While a PAL version is planned, Project M currently only supports the NTSC-U and the NTSC-J version of the game which you can find at http://projectmjp.toypark.in/downloads.php. PAL players may hop on the official IRC for customized assistance.

8. PAL Wii users who have a homebrewed Wii can load an NTSC version of the game through Gecko OS.

9. If you have a newer model Wii (which comes with newer model Wii Remotes) you may be experiencing issues with the Wii Remote syncing back up. This is because newer model Wii Remotes do not work with Gecko OS (what hackless users load through). The only way to get the game to launch at this point is to buy an older model Wii Remote or borrow one from someone you know.
